What is a marketing contact in Hubspot CRM?

Ever wondered about marketing contacts in Hubspot? Are these just all my contacts? Why do I see a number of marketing contacts in my invoice?

When you select your Hubspot Marketing Hub subscription  you also select a contact tier, this tier sets a limit to the number of contacts that your company can engage through Hubspot Marketing tools every month - these contacts are called Marketing Contacts. 

Contacts that you're not planning on engaging through marketing tools should be marked as non-marketing contacts (Property: "Marketing Contact Status: Non-Marketing Contact"); they don't count against your tier and they have no impact on the marketing hub subscription price. 

Below is an example of the number of marketing contacts included in a Marketing Hub Starter plan:

 

  • If a contact is not marked as a “Marketing Contact”, Hubspot will not send them marketing emails, not even when they have been added to the target list in a campaign.
  • If a contact is not marked as a "Marketing Contact", you can only send them transactional emails, like a receipt, an invoice, a confirmation of a purchase or a service order, Etc. But you can't send them anything related to marketing or sales promotions.

 

Count of Marketing contacts and tiers

You can check your current count of marketing contacts at any time, from the Account & Billing> View usage and limits, you can also check when your next billing cycle starts.

 

By clicking on "Manage marketing contacts", you can clean-up your marketing contacts and confirm the updated count. 

 

As you approach your tier limit, Huspot will send you notifications. 

If you exceed your tier limit, you will be automatically upgraded to the next tier and you will receive a prorated charge.

If you use less than your limit, you will not be automatically downgraded. 

 

Tools that only work with marketing contacts

  • marketing emails
  • ads tool
  • any marketing actions executed by workflows, such as "send email"or ädd to or remove from ads audiences"

 

Other types of emails can be sent to non-marketing contacts

  • One-to-one emails (sales)
  • Sales sequences
  • chat transcripts from conversations
  • registration emails 
  • notifications triggered by tickets
  • transactional emails
  • customer feedback surveys
